US rider Jennifer Gates, daughter of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, revealed on her Instagram account Wednesday that she and Nayel Nassar, an Egyptian show jumper who helped his country qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in October last year as part of the team which won the CSIO4*-W Nations Cup of Rabat, are engaged. Nassar proposed during a recent ski trip.

The couple both attended Stanford University (although not at the same time) and bonded over a love of horses and equestrian sport. After graduating in 2018, Gates spent a year traveling on the Longines Global Champions Tour and the Global Champions League.

The couple met in 2017 and later that year travelled to Kuwait to visit with Nassar’s family. They are currently based in New York City while Gates attends the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Nassar owns Nassar Stables LLC in Encinitas, California. On the current FEI World Jumping Rankings, Nassar, who was born in Chicago but grew up in Kuwait and later trained in Europe, is 41st, while Gates, who rides as an amateur, ranks 221st.

“I’m feeling like the luckiest (and happiest) man in the world right about now,” Nassar, 29, posted on his Instagram account about his 24-year-old fiancée. “Jenn, you are everything I could have possibly imagined … and so much more. I can’t wait to keep growing together through this journey called life, and I simply can’t imagine mine without you anymore.” Also on Instagram, Jennifer’s parents Bill and Melinda Gates stated were “thrilled” for the couple. No wedding date has been announced as yet.
